Yucca plant flowering?

We planted a yucca bush about 11 years ago when we moved into our new home (NJ). It has done very well over the years, but this is the FIRST year ever that it has grown a flower stalk!!! Is this normal to take this long? The buds are many and have not yet bloomed. We are so excited, but want to know if this happens yearly or every few years? What do we do with the flower stalk once it is finished? Do we remove it or let it be?

Yucca plant flowering?
My yucca plant didnt flower the whole the first 2 yrs i lived in my home but now it flowers every year. I didnt used to water it or anything so that may have something to do with it. Since it has been watered and fertilized it is huge and doing very well. It is best to cut off the stalk after flowering as it gets seeds on it and will make many many more plants if they drop. Also if yours has mutliplied to about six different plants like mine did you can take a spade shovel and pop them out of the ground like i did and thin them out, they seem to do much better that way.
Reply:Mine did that last year...I wonder if it will do it again. I remember reading in a survival book that you can eat a part of the flower(?). Nothing on it looked edible to me.
