Are there any engineers working on new technology to keep trains from derailing?

It seems like they are derailing on a regular basis and cause so much destruction %26amp; devastation to the environment %26amp; people. Biohazardous materials are planning to be shipped across the country to Yucca Mountain, passing through Vegas, isn't that incredibly dangerous being that trains are so unreliable?

This has been happen from the dawn of time for trains. Its just that we live in an information age. Thus information travels great lenth in a matter of mins.

It takes a great lenght in order to have a train stop. Lets look at the big old Oil tankers. Why on earth do they crash into another tanker? Take miles ontop of miles to just change course. To stop a train that is carrying X amount of weight is a great task in itself.

I would not be looking forward to change any time soon. Change cost money and that is something a company does not wish to invest unless it brings greater profit.
Reply:That my dear has already been solved and it is called maglev, it is a magnetically levitated train that is built around the tracks and cannot derail and it goes 300 mph, check out maglev on the net.
Reply:Yes. There are companies working on the problem. Lockheed Martin was one, but I'm not sure they still are. The trouble with our railway, however, is that we run passenger trains on the same rails that carry freight. Freight trains distort the rails because of the weight of the freight and make high speed travel by the passenger trains impossible. Then the passenger train try to go fast, they can and do crash.
Reply:I live far away from Vegas so its not a problem

(They have been doing it for years quietly )
