What is this crazy plant/tree?

We bought a plant/tree a couple of years ago and planted it at the front of the house. It is growing like mad and now seems to be blooming a kind of crazy triffid from the top. Some of its leaves are going brown and yellow so i need to know what it is so i can find out how to care for it! I cant upload a pic so i will try to describe it.

Its now about 5ft high and has long spiky green leaves which either stick up or droop down over it as they get longer. It has a failry thin (can get hands around it) brown trunk but the leaves grow out of it pretty much all the way down. It now has what looks like something flowering out of the top.

I'm not sure if its some kind of yucca plant but i cant seem to find a pic on the net that looks like it. Would appreciate any help!

What is this crazy plant/tree?
Hi Psiren It definitely is a Cordyline. It will have white flowers which look like a large tuft at the top. Any of the strappy leaves that are brown or yellow cut them off with scissors. Start from the bottom . The aim is to create a nice straight trunk as each set of leaves die back and are taken off. Once the flower fades remove it. Occasionally you may get a new side shoot growing from the bottom. Feed with a general fertiliser. I, like Sunshine, work in a Garden Centre. Cheers Pendelli

Reply:it sounds to me like a cordiline plant.they dont flower very often and need little care.you should peel off the dead leaves and leave it to its own devices realli.oo and if it gets too big you kan chop it down about a foot above the ground and it will come back!! marc
