Yucca Tree?

My boyfriend just recently bought me a 30 year old yucca tree. But our house gets absolutely no light. The leaves are turning yellow, and I cant put it outside yet cause its way to cold hear on Long Island. I was hoping that it might servive the winter inside and once spring %26amp; summer comes i could put it outside where it will hopefully thrive. Will that work or is it hopeless? Thank You

Yucca plants are generally very hardy. Maybe the tree needs transplanting but I'd wait until it looks better, and then use a cactus soil that includes sand--not a rich soil for this arid, cane plant. I agree that it needs a strong, artificial grow light suspended overhead. In fact, yuccas thrive in very bright light. The more light you can provide, the better. Too bad you don't have a big southern window. Since they are durable plants, they can tolerate being dry. Water with luke warm water only when the soil feels dry. Over watering will show as a brown tip with a yellow halo. Under watering is indicated in shriveled stalks (above the woody trunk), and solid yellow and brown leaves. These are usually the lower leaves. These unsightly leaves and brown tips can be trimmed off. Don't forget to fertilize in the spring with a fertilizer for cacti. Temperature preference: Cool, for the most part. Temperature of 60 degrees F, with variations from 50 degrees F to 70 degrees F. Night temperature 50 degrees F. to 60 degrees. Turning the plant every other month or so will help it to grow in a more pleasing shape. You might want to wipe down the leaves once in awhile to remove dust and cobwebs. While doing so, check for red spider mites--known to like yucca plants.
Reply:If you go to a hardware or mass merchandise store, in the gardening section they have "Gro Lights". Read the instructions carefully, use it properly, and it should help you keep your plant in good shape. I live in New Mexico and use the lights every winter. Good luck!
Reply:It needs more light.It doesn't need to be sunlight,you can use fluorescent aquarium lights
Reply:Try using an incandescent or fluorescent light on it. Turn the light on during the day, and have it off during the night. They warmth of your house's interior should be sufficient, and the artificial light will simulate the real world.
