I'm in the cal. desert.my mom and stepdad are in the yucca valley area.
I'm really worried about them(sawtooth complex fire)I can see the smoke from my house but they are closer.I want to know how much danger they are in.
Does anyone know where I can get more info?
The California Department of Forestry manages all California wildfires and can be relied on for information. See the link below. They put up incident reports and these are used by local media to inform the public - including you.
Also, if you know someone with XM radio, you can monitor the emergency alert station.
I hope for the best. Good luck.

What plant does the tumbleweed come from?and who wants Yuccas???
A neighber asked me if I new what the plant that becomes a tubleweed was called and I didnt know so thought Id ask here
Any one wanna buy some Yucca plants????
What plant does the tumbleweed come from?and who wants Yuccas???
Actually, tumbleweeds are what remains of the plant:
Amaranthus albus or Amaranthus graecizans
When the plant dies, it snaps off at ground level and what is left is a 2 or 3 foot ball of dead plant that is called a tumbleweed. The first time I encountered one on my way to Arizona 40 years ago, one crossed the highway in front of me and I slammed on the brakes to avoid a collision. Never did that again.

Reply:All dead plants have tumbleweed potential: a tumbleweed is just a dead plant -sometimes roots and all- that is blown around in the wind.

Tell your neighbour that now you have found the names, he has to memorise them!

To What Extent is Nuclear Power Safe?
just wondering what people think.
i think that it could be safe for now, but people will have to deal with the waste once the containers break apart. i dont think yucca mountain is a good solution to the storing of nuclear power. i do think that it would make power cheaper and it doesnt put green house gases into the atmosphere.
To What Extent is Nuclear Power Safe?
The amount of nuclear waste produced each year is profoundly miniscule , compared to the amounts of sulfur, nitrogen oxides, mercury, lead, fly ash, soot, CO2, aerosols, etc... produced by coal. For nuclear fuel, it's on the order of dozens of tons, for coal, it's on the order of BILLIONS of tons.
We don't level entire mountains to mine uranium.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPixjCnes...
(If you have Google Earth, take a look at West Virginia, over 250 mountains have been removed there to date)
If such waste were finely ground, and spread over the entire earth's surface, the increase in radioactivity would be almost undetectable. The same would be true if the radioactive elements where gradually dissolved in the earth's seas. (not that I'm suggesting it.....)
While the dangers of radioactivity are real, I think that when dealing with radiation you have to ask yourself "how much."
Even inside yucca mountain, the level of radiation is so low that the containers can be inspected in person with minimal protection. If one of the containers where to break open or leak, then there would be danger of course, but the facility is extremely well prepared to deal with something like that. An earthquake or cave in wouldn't be much of a problem, it would just permanently bury the containers.......
I also think that the public has a sensational, and wholly irrational fear of anything labeled "nuclear," or "radioactive."
It's worth nothing that air itself is radioactive, due to radioactive isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, argon, and naturally occurring radon. Human bodies also emit radioactivity due to the above....
Got to go now, but i could rant about this for hours,

How is Mccain in touch with regular people???????
He was born into a well-connected family.
He was a Senator for 30+ years.
He married a hairess to a fortune.
He has health insurance through his Senate office.
Do you think he pumps his own gas...or buys his own groceries?
When the state of AZ was against making their Yucca mountain the site for nuclear waste deposits...he didn't listen to them.
How exactly is he in touch with the regular people?

Where can I buy these plants? (names inside. possibly rare)?
Latin Names:
1)Dracaena deremensis
2)Yucca elefantipes
They are not sold in any of my local stores, and I don't know any "specialized" stores. I'd order them online, but I don't see anyone selling them. These are not supposed to be very rare because they are houseplants as far as I know. Can anyone tell me where I can get these?

Why do so many Republicans vote against animal rights and environmental issues?
Mitt Romney tied his dog to the top of his car for 12 hours
Huckabee voted Yes on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
News reported that he covered up his son hanging a dog, who died from the hanging He declines he covered it up but did say it happened
John McCain voted NO on continuing desert protection in California
Ron Paul voted Yes On promoting Yucca Mountain
I'm NOT a democrat
Why do so many Republicans vote against animal rights and environmental issues?
The acts against animals are one thing, but I don't hold a politician accountable for the deeds of their children. Romney's dog was in a carrier but still it shows ignorance. But to the more pressing issue Republicans don't buy into the environmental wacoism's of the extreme left. For instance ANWAR is an area with 1000's of square miles of frozen tundra and they need 20 square miles of it to produce enough oil to drop 12% of our imports. It makes no sense not too do this and the environmentalist are not so much against it as they are wanting a pay off from it.

1. Wind farms on New England coast was shot down by Hollywood elites because it would ruin their view.
2. Hollywood liberals own many large homes and consume more fuel, excess, excess, excess, etc..... But think driving a Hybrid negates this wastefullness.
3. Environmentalists did not want nuclear power and succeeded in preventing nuclear power plants from being built. What is the alternative but to use more fossil fuels if a viable energy source is shot down?
4. Who says drilling in the Arctic refuge is going to damage the environment? Supporting mid-east oil and giving them money to invest in China and educate their children to hate the west is good for the environment?
5. Etc.....
Reply:Its better for business and making money.
Environmental issues and Animal rights means more government control and taxes.
Reply:It's not so much that they are against animal rights as they understand they are animals and should be treated kindly, but are not human. As for environmentalist, I live in the South. You'll find no finer conservationist than most hunters and fishermen. Being careless destroys their opportunity to hunt and fish.
Reply:It could well be that they are standing up for the top animal on the list. HUMANS. The environment will fix itself and putting the US as the bad guy is simply a sign of stupidity. China and India will dwarf our contamination of the environment and they go unchallenged by the activist. People need to understand they can act rationally to save the world and not waste more protesting than they can hope to save. Al Gore is a prime example of taking one way and acting another. His cross glove private jet flights cause more harm than the people of small city. Naturally libs put the blame on conservatives as liberal giants fly around (like Hillary) in helicopters trying to convinced the people of Iowa how likable she is.
Reply:A lot of them are full of anger and/or hatred and are brought up thinking animals and the environment are God given rights that will always be around,no matter what.
Look at Todd O's answer...
1.) He's talking about an elite view of HUMANS, that really has nothing to do with how the average person thinks or behaves
2.) First off, I believe this is a direct reference to Dole. His house is large so it uses a lot of electricity BUT he also has a generator that uses renewable energy and he donates money to some tree planting operation. L. di Caprio could afford to have any d@mn car he wants but he chose some hybrid that was around $20,000-30,000. There are tons of actors/actresses who do something for the environment, if nothing else, they get tens of thousands to become aware of the problem and all those people do something themselves to conserve electricity.
3.) An alternative has not been found but denying the problem certainly won't get you far.
As far as nuclear power goes, it's very explosive, therefore extremey dangerous and the biproducts are as bad or worse for the environment.
4. 'Who says drilling in the Arctic refuge is going to damage the environment?'-I'm pretty sure it was said by environmental scientists. And, except you, I've never heard anyone question that. Just if it the end result would really bother us that much since we don't use the majority of the land anyway. Sheesh.
Giving money to China to train their kids to hate us?...something like that. I believe dear old George Bush, Jr. just named them top country to trade with so it doesn't seem like Republicans give the human population more consideration than business pockets. Gee, what a surprise.
Reply:As long as we humans EAT animals, you gonna have trouble getting the respect you deserve as an animal. No judgment here. I like a good steak. I just hope the poor animal was not unduly terrorized or mis treated prior to it's death ...I take to heart that I am what I eat.
Environment? We live here. Is you house clean? Does everything in it work? How do others that live around you feel about your house? and YOU? I think a good Rep. kinda thinks this way. We are masters of the land, stewards to a healthy and prosperous world and if we have to choose between living well, longer and in a more balanced world ...to HELL with the in dangered Spotted Owl!
Reply:Ron Paul sees the role of government more as a ref/host/mechanism. Not as a player in this experiment we call the USA.
Having real free trade and less government is more effective.
Just a small thought from me: Imagine the government had bids for sub-contractors vs what we have now for building highways.
Completion is healthy for a strong economy and advancement.
As for the environment: none of us need to argue that our government is corrupt. Last time I looked the ones who pollute (the corporations) don't seem as concerned as the general public does. If you followed private property laws without most of the restrictions which have been placed by our government against you, you'd be able to sue them!
So I finish with a question:
Do the polluters listen to the government or their losses more?
Reply:The are all just egotistical dogs so they should take better care of the creatures great and small. But not now. This is their 15 minutes of glory the always dreamed of. Only one will come out the winner and the rest wil evaporate. Hope it will be be accelerated by removing the majority from office in coming Congressional elections. It is time for them to go. They preen and strut now, but they are the past and not the future.
Reply:There are those on this planet who believe we should be the caretakers of that which sustains us; and there are those who do not. It doesn't take a genius to figure out if you fail to protect the land we live on, the water we drink, and the air we breathe, what's left ? Oil ? Mighty filling in the wallet, but it will hardly sustain life. I don't thnk you have to be a "hippie" to understand that concept.
Reply:Because there are always two sides.
Huckabee did not see himself as voting Yes on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He saw himself as voting yes on energy security.
You'll get no where only thinking about the side you like.
Reply:Reading people's responses here about how "Republicans are worried about more important things" makes me want to vomit. Somebody even said "the environment will fix itself". Are we serious people? People get so defensive when saying "we aren't hippies"...
Last I checked showing respect and compassion for the world around us was pretty much the path to peace. In my opinion, I'd like to believe mankind is inherently good. And if you want to argue for saying it isn't, you go right ahead. You go right ahead and argue against respect and compassion.
Don't get me wrong, I understand when people say that we have more important things to worry about, but I'm pretty sure that we should care about everything and not just discard something as not good enough to be concerned about. It is our jobs as humans, Americans, and a democracy to GIVE A SH*T.
Reply:I agree with a couple others here. Republicans worry more about the more important issues.
Reply:Because there are more important things to think about...
We're not hippies.
Reply:I like how the last poster "pshhs" saving the trees. I can see her first point. But one shouldn't equate abortion with evironmental protection.
I think it's more because they are very against science or simply not interested in learning about it - so any environmental issue or concern They also are conservative and care about the people directly for the moment and making money now. They don't think of the long term effects that not protecting these regions has on people. I think you can have a balance between profit but also protecting nature.
For example Huckabee still thinks evolution has a theory on the origin of life (it does not). Although he is open to evolutionary process as he said on O'Reilly. But I think they also don't have to respect for animals. They consider themselves master and the animals and land are there to serve them.
I am not sure if this is true. But this is the current explanation I will go with until someone convinces me otherwise.
I also don't see the validity with a previous post about Hollywood Liberals. Hollywood Liberals are nutjobs. Not all people who are what is considered "left" leaning are crazy just like not all right wing conservatives are ranting religious nuts. Hollywood Liberals are a poor example, just like Ann Coulter would be a poor example of the typical conservative.
EDIT: I also think that they don't want to turn off the right wing nutjobs who do support him - those ones are adamant against environment protection and consider it hippie nonsense. Meanwhile the normal Republican supporters may care about the environment, but it just isn't a priority and won't base their vote on that. So the person running might as well feed into the nuts without suffering a loss from their broader mainstream Republican base.
Reply:i dont like mitt but the dog was in a carrier get the story straight , did you know its illegal to have you dog unsecured in your car to begin with so why arent you going after that, how about the fact a dog can go blind from hanging its head out of a window with all the debris flying in their eyes, so your point is moot

Do you believe that nuclear power is our future as a nation?
can we really be okay with the despose of our waste in Yucca Mountain or is anyone else scared that we will have an other falling out like chernobyl or three mile island?
if you dont believe nuclear power is our future then what is in your eyes?
Do you believe that nuclear power is our future as a nation?

Reply:When we dispose of radioactive waste, it's supposed to stay where it is for 100,000 years and we think that it will stay there because among other things, it's put in a geological area that's hundreds of millions of years old. Even if it leaks out after a couple of hundred years (which is almost inconceivable), it will probably be ok as the radiation will have died down a bit by then and Chernobyl is supposedly going to be habitable in a couple of hundred years.
Nuclear power is safe clean and expensive. If we all don't mind paying a bit more for power, then we can go nuclear. Otherwise coal or gas is the cheapest power.
Reply:Of course not, I don't believe the promises given by the nuclear industry claiming the cheapness of nuclear energy and how there are no CO2 elements emitted. Actually, the prices of nuclear fuel reactors (to construct and maintain) are several times the amount it takes to use traditional fuel/oil. Government subsidies help to make nuclear energy slightly cheaper. Pertaining to radiation and harm to the environment, nuclear fuel emitts three basic types of radiation and many radioactive elements like Iodine 131 that are harmful to the environment and ecosystem and stay radioactive for thousands of years. Plus, a nuclear reactor meltdown could release myriad carcinogenic (inducing cancer or cancer cells) and mutagenic radioactive elements into the human body and ecosystem for hundreds of generations.
I believe that possible sources of energy in the future are renewable resources like solar power, wind power, or tidal power. Also, during the transition to renewable elements, biomass or cogeneration of fuels can be persued to temporarily reduce global warming.
Reply:Nuclear may or may not be in our future. That is for the people and or instead the powerful interests that be to decide. My preference however is no.
Nuclear is dangerous, takes a long time a precious resources to build, and has no good solution to dispose of the waste.
The solution is simple. An interconnected network of alternative energies. In fact according to Bill McKibben's book Deep Ecology if every home and business put solar panels on their roofs it could power 3/4 of all our current energy uses. Coupled by the fact that we already consume vastly more energy than any other country in the world industrial or otherwise all we need to do is cut back our usage a bit and the problem is solved.
Connect all these units into a universal grid so that some customers are paying and others being paid for their excess energy production. This puts the power in the peoples hands and not locked into an oligarchy system of oppression and dependence.
All this of course could be supplemented with wind, wave, geothermal, hydro-electric, and other clean technologies. These too could be jacked into the universal grid giving alternate power when some systems are producing less.
Finally by building more efficient cars (plug in electric hybrids) and homes (i.e. in ground, stays a stable 56 degrees) we would need very little extra production. The global warming crisis would eventually abate and food prices would stabilize. People would have more money from less spending on energy and more jobs created from new technology industries.
It's a nice dream anyway. one I will work to make happen if possible.
Reply:Nuclear may be needed in the short term, but the future is solar. In the not so distant future (next few years) the cost of PV modules will half or possibly quarter. At $1.00 per watt, this will be a very attractive option on new homes, as well as an affordable retro fit on existing homes and buildings. By 2015, costs may fall as low as 50 cents per watt.
Currently, efficiencies are low, below 20%, the current record is about 42%. I would think over the next decade, an average of 25% could be achieved. We'll see. I'll be installing mine in 2010.
Reply:Nuclear is one part of the mix and it will become more prevalent. The capital costs are high but it is virtually pollution-free and the incremental costs are low. At the end of the day, though, there is now such thing as "one best way" for anything. We have enough cheap oil for at least another century and there's enough coal in the ground for several centuries beyond that. Solar and wind will never be more than a boutique energy source best suited for remote "off the grid" locations because the amount of energy they provide is extremely limited, and biofuels are a non-starter because their production uses more energy than they deliver.
Reply:Nuclear power is the only way to go, three mile island was before, cell phone, lap tops, deck tops, text messages, x boxes on and on and on. The tech has improved a billion percent.
Reply:The half-life of iodine 131 is just over 8 days......not thousands of years.
Thats an example of the superstitions and mythology being used to delay the inevitable construction of nuke plants.

Which house plants are ok for chameleons to climb on?
i have a veiled/yemen chameleon and she wants more exercise so i thought to get her a big house plant to climb on, i know they don't eat them but does that mean that all of them are ok for her to climb on? at the moment i've got her a scindapsus mosspole, i know yucca is ok but they're not very leafy so she can't hide if she wants.
Which house plants are ok for chameleons to climb on?
The use of natural plants is beneficial when keeping chameleons. The plant naturally increases humidity, and some species will browse leaves. Veiled chameleons in particular like to eat vegetation. If you want to prevent your plants from being munched on by your chameleon you can use clothes pins to clip collard greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens to the branches which will allow for grazing. Just replace the greens every day and remove any dried or yellow leaves immediately.
Avoid substrates other than clean soil that does not include fertilizers, pesticides or other additives such as perlite, or small bark. A chameleon that injests such additives could experience an intestinal blockage serious enough to cause death.
New plants should at least be cleaned topically before introducing it to an enclosure. Nurseries are notorious for using topical and systemic pesticides. We recommend that you spray the entire plant with a mild soap and water solution (2 tablespoons soap to one quart water). Make sure to get the underside of the leaves. Allow to stand for 20 minutes then rinse until no soap is left.
Trimming the root ball will encourage new plant growth. For added safety you can remove all soil and hose the roots, then repot in clean soil without additives. Allow the plant to rest for a few days before using it.
Special care should be taken when trimming ficus trees. The leaves and branches leak a milky sap when cut or broken. This can be very irritating to a chameleon's eyes, and potentially cause infection. To avoid this, remove the chameleon from the enclosure, trim the tree and rinse. The rinsing seems to help the cuts heal but we like to have an extra tree or two to allow the tree to rest.
Commonly used plants are :
China doll
Ficus ali
Ficus benjamina,
Hibiscus
Pothos
Shefflera
Hostas
Choose a plant that is the right size for your animal, make sure branches will support your chameleons weight without breaking. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the plant is not toxic, as many chameleons eat foliage. For outdoor cages Grape and Kiwi vines are excellent.
Make sure when you introduce a new plant that you wash the plant and wipe off all surfaces on the plant. Most nurseries and plant stores use pesticides and fertilizers so wiping off the plant can help remove these. The best way to make sure a plant is pesticide and fertilizer free is to immediatly re-pot the plant in a new pot with clean non fertilized soil and keep the plant outside, watering frequently, for 3 weeks. This will allow any fertlizers and pesticides to leach out in the water.
Reply:all sorts strong ones
Reply:ficus trees are really good
Reply:i also have scindapsus plants and what is really good is cissus, also a creeper, hardy enough to be kept in terrarium, but with stronger stalks than scindapsus. i put tree branches (dead) in the terrarium and let the creepers climb on it so the chameleon can be more confident if he is surrounded by leaves to hide behind if he wants. also you can cut some leafed tree branches (mapple, lime, oak, etc) and put these in the terarium and change them when not fresh until your terrarium potplants grow large enough. i did it and it was good - the easiest way to make the terrarium full of something green. dead twigs are enough for just climbing but green ones will make the animal happier and better color. ( wash the branches with soapy water and then clean water to remove dust and dirt especially if u live in a city) however, chameleons DO EAT the green leaves occasionally, so never use anything poisonous or sprayed with pesticide and if u buy the potplant u MUST leave it outside the terrarium for two weeks or at least one - they spray it massively and also fertilize it way too much and the chameleon WILL eat the soil if she feels like it!!! so u should also take it to the bath and spray the plant with soapy water and clean water and pour a lot of water through the soil to get it rid of as much stuff as possible. make sure the soil doesnt contain tiny little capsules with fertilizer (little round balls that can be crushed in your fingers) these are irresistible and deadly - if u see these u should take out the upper soil and put some clean soil instead.
Reply:the common Pothos is one of the best when grown through branches and sticks or up post. There used to be a deal called the Chamelon Condo. It had a dripper and feeding station and basking and U.v lights. It hung from the ceiling and was about six feet tall. It had planter pots and branches in a macramae deal it was cool looking. Chameleons such as the Veiled will eat plants also they tend to snack on Pothos regular. Best place to find more info is on the Chameleon forum on www.Kingsnake.com. They could tell you if the condo still exist amd where to purchase.
Reply:why not just put some branches together, you can always change them to suit how big or small you require
Reply:most of them are ok, provided that they are not poisonous and/or have spikes.
Reply:Tropical plants that have a need for humidity work well. If you are worried about poisoning talk to your local garden store employees. Ask what plants are safe for children and dogs to ingest without harm. Stay away from plants that have a strong smell with no flowers present ( some plants can irritate the skin of some animals. A strong scent can be a clue that it has this defense.) If you decide to use sticks found outside it is never a good idea to just put them into the cage. First you want to ether put them in your oven wrapped in foil at 200 for about an hour to kill any mites or other pest you don't want in the cage. Another method is to soak it in a 10% bleach solution for at least a half hour and let it dry until the bleach smell fades away. Silk flowers purchased from a craft store work well. Just be sure to tape off any sharp ends wih florists tape.

Where might i find info on spiders of the southern california deserts with pictures at?
the spider in question looks quite alot like a black widow with out the red hourglass spot on the belly. It is totally all a shiny black color it has 4long legs on either side of the body, with what looks like 2 walrus tusks on the front of the face. It is aprox. 1/2inch in length. I reside in the high desert of Southern California(Yucca Valley) and i found this creature lurking on the wall by my doorbell at the front door. My door faces the east. I found it around 2pmm pst. If this helps with my question.i would like to get info and pictures if possible. It is not a black widow.
Where might i find info on spiders of the southern california deserts with pictures at?
Here is site that has desert spiders information, and there is a spider that is a "false" black widow, looks just like a black widow without the hourglass shape on the abdo, and it is found in the So. California area, so this may be your spider.

How much light do Yuccas need?
Full direct sun for at least 6 hours a day.
How much light do Yuccas need?
they need a lot of light my husband is from panama, in central america and they grow them there. its very warm and sunny all year around
Reply:They do good indoors with indirect light and do not water too much. As you feel the soil mostly dry, give it a little water. bettyk
Reply:Hello I have mine planted on the north side of my house ..outdoors so they do like light but not direct..they dont need a whole lot.but do need some.
Reply:Hi!!
I would give it as much light as possible. They are originally from the south, but they have "moved" north, too. Around here (MO) they have jumped the borders of gardens and I have seen them growing wild in the woods. That's not a whole lot of light, but they do best in lots of light. If you are growing it inside, I would put it in your sunniest window and it should do well.
Reply:Indoor plant, or outdoor plant?
Both require full sun. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight. A south-westerly exposure.

What is this crazy plant/tree?
We bought a plant/tree a couple of years ago and planted it at the front of the house. It is growing like mad and now seems to be blooming a kind of crazy triffid from the top. Some of its leaves are going brown and yellow so i need to know what it is so i can find out how to care for it! I cant upload a pic so i will try to describe it.
Its now about 5ft high and has long spiky green leaves which either stick up or droop down over it as they get longer. It has a failry thin (can get hands around it) brown trunk but the leaves grow out of it pretty much all the way down. It now has what looks like something flowering out of the top.
I'm not sure if its some kind of yucca plant but i cant seem to find a pic on the net that looks like it. Would appreciate any help!
What is this crazy plant/tree?
Hi Psiren It definitely is a Cordyline. It will have white flowers which look like a large tuft at the top. Any of the strappy leaves that are brown or yellow cut them off with scissors. Start from the bottom . The aim is to create a nice straight trunk as each set of leaves die back and are taken off. Once the flower fades remove it. Occasionally you may get a new side shoot growing from the bottom. Feed with a general fertiliser. I, like Sunshine, work in a Garden Centre. Cheers Pendelli

Little bugs are apparently killing my yucca plant?
The flowers are just now coming up and I can't wait to see them, but lately I've been seeing these little dark soft bodied bugs all over it, and some of the leaves are discoloring. I'm assuming the bugs are at least partially to blame, but I don't know how to get rid of them.
They like to hang out right in the center of the plant, where it is impossible to get to them, so hand picking isn't working. A spider made a web near them, but when I dropped one of the little buggers in there, the spider acted like they were distasteful and wouldn't eat it.
The only thing I can really think of to kill them all is pesticide, but I have a cat that just can't resist licking, playing with, and/or eating everything in sight and he only recently got sick from getting into things he shouldn't.
Help please!
Little bugs are apparently killing my yucca plant?
Aphids infest yucca plants, especially the tender flowers. You can purchase insecticidal soap or make it yourself:
1 to 2 tablespoons liquid soap
1 quart water
Mix well and pour into a spray bottle. Squirt on bugs.
Aphids have a waxy coating that keeps them from drying up. The soap dissolves the coating, so they just turn into little mummies and stop bothering your plants.
this mixture won't harm your cat.
Reply:try spraying them with a mix of dishsoap and water
that is what they recommend for roses and their little green bugs.
it can´t hurt to try
good luck.
Reply:Spray bottle with Dawn dish washing soap and water. Spray the plant and especially the bugs. Then rinse the next day.
Reply:I had the same problem with mine and also some of my cacti. They went away in a few days. Don't know what they went or where they came from.
Reply:I don't believe anything will kill a yucca plant! You ought to sell the bugs if they do.
Reply:I have a Jerry Bakers book on natural yard care He has a site also. I use deluted dishsoap on leaves of roses bush for mites. I was unable to locate any thing directly about yucca except that dear do not like that plant. One recipe for aphids is chopped onion, 2 clves garlic chopped, 1 tbsp baby shampoo, with 2 cups water,, mix and let set over nihght, strain and pour in mister ( I used empry squirt bottle) apply liberally.
To help keep cat way from areas sprinkle ammmonia in that area. Will not harm soil. it is a source of nitrgen. Might can get his books at library, good reading *mamatx

How does one propagate a red yucca?
I know that one can dig it up, divide and replant. BUT--If that is not possible, as in my case, is taking a cutting off the plant possible? The green blades, or the red blooming offshoot? Does one put in water, or let dry out and then plant? Just what do I do?
I need the easiest, non-digging with shovel, way, THANKS!!
How does one propagate a red yucca?
The best way is nature, you know , the birds and the bees.
Reply:division or by seed only. Division faster in order to get it bloom.
Ripe seed can be started in the fall (but much patience is needed). One report was that after two years, seedlings were only 6 inches tall. Red Yucca is slow growing in the beginning (maybe even sulks for a year or two). Eventually, offshoots and baby plants will appear as a signal that the plant is ready to really grow

I have a Yucca, or a Cordyline Australis, not quite sure which.?
It has the leaves of this:
http://www.coolpalms.co.uk/shop/images/A...
with the furry trunk of this:
http://bp2.blogger.com/_7m-nNSHCETk/R6av...
Anyways, I inherited this tree when I moved into my house a few weeks back. I have done nothing to it whatsoever. It was all green when I moved in, but now the leaves are going yellow at the ends. Weather wise we have had both heavy showers and days of heat at a time.
Any ideas what (if anything) I should do? It is located right in the middle of the garden and is around eight feet tall. It's obviously been there for years so it can't be the location.
I have a Yucca, or a Cordyline Australis, not quite sure which.?
I think it is a cordyline. To make sure run your finger down the side of the leaf, if it does not feel sharp I am right. If ,however, you end up with a cut finger it is a yucca. Best bet is to put a bag of manure around it's roots and that should help it green up again.
Reply:Looks like a cordyline, and as suggested evergreen plants remove their old leaves by gradually killing them off. This is how it makes its trunk. Just carefully peel of the old ones if you don't like the look. If it is just getting rid of its old leaves only the bottom leaves will be effected.
Your rain may be upsetting it, heat shouldn't affect it . In Australia we use these in drought tolerant gardens. If this is the case as long as it has good drainage it will recover.

My yucca tree seems to have graying spots on the leaves. I forgot to water it and it was dieing. Whats wrong?
I forgot to water it. For like about 1 week. I started watering it again and its leaves started to brown and yellow. I trimmed those ones off and even cut the whole head off. I then noticed that some of the leaves had like dust on them. But it was not dust. It was grayish spots on the leaves on some of them but not all. I was wondering if it was a fungus. So I ended up just cutting all the heads off of it because a friend told me that that sometimes could help. I am hoping that it does not have a fungus. Ive had it for about a year now. Whats wrong with my poor plant?
My yucca tree seems to have graying spots on the leaves. I forgot to water it and it was dieing. Whats wrong?
just that , you said it it was dieing because you forgot to water it and it had to much shade maybe
Reply:yucca can tolerate being without water for a week, especially if it is in a big pot. what it can't tolerate - standing in a shadowy place and being overwatered. your gray dusty spots are mold, it is fungus, and it is cos your plant is standing in a shadowy place and u overwater it. soil should dry 2 cm deep between watering. u try it with finger before watering. i don't know whether it would survive, if it is not a big tree u should repot it into new soil and new pot. when u remove it from pot inspect roots. if they re all brown and soft throw it away - it is ill from up and down. next time be more accurate with watering plants
Reply:Are you sure it's a yucca? Is it inside or out? Is it in a pot or in the ground? Not really enough info, but unless a yucca is in the smallest pot imaginable and in desert type heat, it shouldn't require water more than every two or three weeks. they are extremely drought tolerant. Take a sample into your local nursery, in a plastic bag in case it's diseased, they should be able to answer your question more effectively

Yucca plant leaves are shrinking at the tips and look dark and too soft am I overwatering?
I purchased a yucc aplant which i put on a pot with miracle gro potting mix. The pot has a subirrigation system which I overfilled for a few days. The plant's leaves have become shrunken frail at the tip with a dark green/brown color. They dont break if you touch them but they bend quite easily. What am I doing wrong. This plant is supposed to use very little water and I don't know if i messed up by putting too much water for the first couple of days but now it looks like its in bad shape.
Yucca plant leaves are shrinking at the tips and look dark and too soft am I overwatering?
My dear friend, YES---- Let it dry out and only give enough to dampen the soil. Once a week. GOD Bless you.
Reply:Yucca's a succulent so it does not need to be watered until the soil has dried out somewhat. It DOES need humidity which you're probably not getting in Chicago. You can try misting the leaves in the a.m. but not at night.

What is the name of that delicious Dominican dish?
It looked like red egg salad. I had gone to a pot luck and some girl made it with boiled eggs, red beets, mayo (avocado...i think??) and some taro or yucca type of root plant that they use over there. This was so delicious!! Can someone tell me what it is and how to make it?
Thanks!!

Ensalada rusa ("Russian" potato salad)
--------------------------------------...
Ensalada Rusa is Dominican's favorite salad. It is usually served on special occasions and is a traditional component of the Christmas dinner. Depending on taste and on the ocassion different versions of this salad may be served. Two common versions are the one that includes beets and another with apples. This last one is the one served for Christmas.
Time: 30 Mins
Difficulty: Eas
Serve: 6 people
Before starting to cook: No prior preparation is necessary.
Ingredients:
1lb of potatoes
1/2 lb or carrots
1/2 cup of sweet corn
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup of peas
1 apple diced into small cubes (optional)
1 medium beet (optional)
1 medium red onion
3 eggs
Salt
Preparation:
Boil the potatoes, carrots and eggs. Boil the beet in a different pot (do not use beet if you are going to use apple). Peel and dice into small cubes.
Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Adjust salt to taste. Serve chilled.
There are infinite variations on the basic theme that can be a very tasty. Just what is actually in the salad seems to be determined in many cases by what happens to be in the pantry. Corn and/or peas are common as the canned variety are fairly inexpensive and readily available. Other alternate ingredients that I've enjoyed in an ensalada rusa are auyama (squash), tayota (chayote), batata (sweet potato), and nabo (turnip). Depending upon ingredients, one can liven it up a bit seasoning to taste with black pepper, or cayenne pepper, or mustard powder though this is the norte americano in me coming out rather than anything Dominican.

When will the US run out of space to store radioactive waste?
Do we really need Yucca Mountain nuclear waste storage facility?
When will the US run out of space to store radioactive waste?
Never. There are vast tracts of the western US that could disappear off the face of the earth, and it would be years before anyone noticed that they had gone missing. But some sort of storage location needs to be defined, and Yucca Mountain is one of the better ones.

60 to the 10 with a trailer, is it a good idea?
I'm coming from Temecula and going to Yucca Valley. I want to go 15,215,60E,10E is there anything I should know or is it better to go 15,215,10E I'm pulling a trailer this Friday after 4:00pm.
60 to the 10 with a trailer, is it a good idea?
The transition from the 215 onto the 60 is a little thin due to construction, but I pull my trailer through there all the time.
It's a little rough getting merged onto the 60 if there is heavy traffic, but when you're coming at them with a rig pulling a trailer, people usually yield.
The other area of concern is the hilly area just before Beaumont. It can be a bit of a pain if you get stuck behind a slow 18 wheeler and cannot pass.
It's a much easier trip if you forget the 60 and continue up to the 10, and it's not a LOT more miles.

Yucca Valley Ca?
Whats is it like living there? the snakes? what do people do there? transportation? weather? coldest it gets?
Yucca Valley Ca?
I have lived in Yucca Valley for about five years and I don't like it. There's really nothing to do. We have to drive 45 minutes to get to a mall, good restaurants, recreation. There is A LOT of drug use her, mostly meth. Luckily, my family is moving away in about a month. I just can't stand it anymore and could not send my child to school here someday. We're staying in CA and paying more for a home but we're moving closer to civilization! The weather is pretty nice though. But if there's nothing to do and a bunch of druggies all around, who cares?
Reply:Yucca Valley is in the desert of course so it's pretty dry. I have lived here for 27 years and I'm 33. So basically my whole life.
It's a pretty quiet town. We don't have a whole bunch of crime like the big cities. There isn't a whole bunch to do here. If you want to shop, you have to go to Palm Desert/Palm Springs. (Only about 35 minutes from here)
We have one movie theater which is dirty and over priced so if you want to see a movie, I suggest going down to PS.
Home prices have dropped which is great for buyers! :) Our home prices are usually between 189,000-299,000 for a very nice 3+2 home.
The snakes stay out of the way for the most part. It's not like they are everywhere. I see them in the roads maybe once during the summer.
Transportation- we all drive when we need to get somewhere. There's not much walking from store to strore in YV. We do have a MBA bus that will take you from 29 Palms to Yucca Valley. The weather is fantastic! We have 4 seasons! Hot Hot Hot in the summer- around 102 ish all the way up to 110 (Sometimes)
Fall is absolutely beautiful! Our winter is around 35 degrees. It snows probably once a year. We are lucky if it sticks for more than one day. (Wish it would snow more)
Spring is the best!
Coldest? I think in our coldest months it gets around 25-30 degrees.
Overall, Yucca Valley is a GREAT place to live. Not many sidewalks and there is no grass- (Unless at the parks) but it is a great place to raise a family!
Smaller community where everyone pulls together!
If you want any more info, let me know! Or if you want photos. I can take some and send them your way!

Why don't we build new nuclear power plants?
It's proven technology to generate power for us that produces no carbon dioxide, sulfur emmisions, lead, mercury, etc. The new designs by GE and the french are very reliable and safe. People just remember chernobyl and 3 mile island. I am not saying we should not develop geothermal, solar, wind, and wave, but nuclear power generation is proven. Some people argue that getting rid of the waste is a problem but there are plenty of plans for storing it and the yucca mountain facility is going to be opening soon.
Why don't we build new nuclear power plants?
I agree that nuclear power is the way to go for mass energy production. However, 'environmentalists' would rather we burn coal and strip-mine the landscape to generate electricity than use nuclear. They make a lot of noise and Congress listens.
I am also a big fan of Bush's progress on hydrogen and geothermal energy. Geothermal is practically unlimited. He has been fighting 'environmentalists' who prefer we burn coal over harnessing the Earth's abundant heat.
Reply:Costs. Nuke plants need to be near large bodies of water. Any land near large bodies of water cost alot. Any people living near that water don't want to see a nuke plant anywhere near them and see their home values drop since they paid alot for them. A nuke reactor built well without using the lowest bidder that would probably cut as many corners as they could would cost alot- billions. Running the facility is actually pretty cheap. Dismanteling it at the end of its lifespan would cost more than all the power it produced during its usefull lifespan. Where's all this extra money going to come from? My taxes. No thanks, conservation is much cheaper.
Reply:There is a huge under ground salt mine that was built for that purpose in New Mexico.

The main difficulty is the expense of dealing with the waste products, not in the production of steam to drive a generator. This is mainly due to the waste being a 10,000 year problem.
Too many of the tanks at Hanford have become corroded and leaked, they "caught" the runoff but it eventually gets into the groundwater, so, the Columbia River has nuclear pollutants downstream of Hanford from these leaky tanks and a bedrock that's more porous than expected over just 60 years. Using glass entombment is promising but the bugs haven't been worked out yet, best so far however, but not cheap. Yucca Flats has been a candidate, but if you live near it, it's a boondoggle for big companies and more land you can't visit.
I'd recommend putting 1,000 square feet of solar panels on your roof, that's about 15Kw per hour full sun, most houses use 30-75 Kw-hours a day and the rest spins the dial to pay the bills. This costs about $40,000us for 25-year, 60-knot wind load panels installed and pays off in a couple of weeks here in Phoenix (not really, but only a couple of years, for Seattle it was about 7 years to pay for itself).
This is for urban housing on the grid, if you need batteries that adds more cost but also way more maintenance, needed for rural areas and then worth it.
With millions of homes now small generation stations, the grid can handle the daily surge without adding capacity to the lines, if there's a brownout or blackout, the solar homes and businesses have their basic needs met. If a terrorist wants to blow a few towers and cause a blackout it's less effective as a strategy with millions of solar homes and businesses around.
However, this takes a huge big chunk 'o cash out of the power companies' pockets and into yours so requires legislation for two-way metering and the rules of who pays what when to who so it can work, many states now support this.
Nothing wrong with nuclear power, it's just a dicey way to make steam, and that's all it's doing is producing superheated steam (~800-degF), I thought you could do that by painting the Los Angeles Aquaduct black, it goes through a couple hundred miles of desert, shouldn't be a problem to power LA, then condense the water to use at the end (only it probably wouldn't get enough pressure to drive turbines but it's a fun thought).
No coal, no oil, no uranium, just sunlight ... panels are around 15-watts/sq.ft. now, not bad at all if you can find some 'cause the rest of the world is buying them like pancakes, especially Asia and Europe.
Reply:Because the "environmentalists" want to slowly drag us back to the stone age. The biggest problem with Nuclear Power plants is having to find a way to store the spent fuel and contaminated wastes.
Reply:DUH! they take millions of years for the leftover waste they cause to break down again. Do we really need to do that?

Which do you prefer: french fries, or deep-fried Yucca roots?
I love Yucca Frita, but french fries are easier to come by even here in PR where the Yucca is a widely used veg.

Should Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository project proceed as planned. Discuss.?
Yes. Its' risk is reasonably low. Surely much lower than doing what we do now, storing it in buildings above ground.
We shouldn't stop looking for even better solutions, but we should start using Yucca.

google your question and you will have lots of references that you can use while you write your report....

Reply:This has no right answer. Putting the waste somewhere must be done(a necessary evil) Until we can safely get it off planet and traveling towards the Sun, we have to put it somewhere. If we closed the nuke pwr plants many people would become, and stay, unemployed. It's a no win situation.
Reply:No, we should abandon this poorly thought out and uneconomical project in favor of large scale reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. This is the only rational approach to our obvious need for an increase in nuclear power generation. France has been doing this for years so the technology is well established. Heck, if all else fails we could probably pay France to do it for us.

Do anoles prefer to be kept in groups or alone?
I have several large yucca plants and ferns in my living room. I got an anole from someone and just let it live in my living room plants just for kicks. Surprisingly he has stayed in the plants and I feed him small spiders and crickets, misting him down on occasion. Would it be ok to add several more to my plants or would they fight?
Do anoles prefer to be kept in groups or alone?
You should keep it in a terrarium. I have 3 that get along in a 20 gallon that is filled with plants.
Reply:Molly is right. I would not let the Anoles roam free in your living room plants. They need a secure enclosure with plenty of room, plants, branches, and rocks to climb on. I have an anole that I keep in a 20 gallon aquarium and it is now 5 years old. I would not keep 2 males together because they can fight. Females, however, get along nicely. In the wild, Anoles live in groups. Don't pair a male and female unless you want babies. If so, you'll need an even larger tank! They tend to drink from water droplets, so mist the tank with water bottle and purchase or raise crickets and/or other small insects for them to eat. I give mine about a dozen crickets each week and coat them with a vitamin powder (available at your local pet store) They make wonderful pets to watch, but should not be handled frequently because they stess easily. Also, they need a source of UVB lighting because it omits vitamin D3, which is important for their overall well being. Hope the advice helps!
Reply:They are territorial. I wouldn't add more than one in another plant.
Reply:Oh my goodness. NO. You don't want those things breeding and running around in there. You need alot more than you have for them to stay healthy anyway, like heat, UVB/UVA bulbs, water, humidifier, calcium supplements, and more.
On the other hand, I guess if you have one, it'd be cool for it to have a friend. BUT if they get away from the plants and go somewhere else in the house, they will die.
Reply:Please, don't let it in just live in the living room. What if it does decide to explore. Here are the supplies you need to get it:
A 20 gallon tank
Crickets
Calcium powder to dust the crickets
Paper towels as a substrate
Plants to climb on
You need to mist the cage down everyday, twice a day. Morning and night. He needs to eat crickets.
No buds unless they are females and it is a females. 2 males is a no no. They are territorial and can fight to the death.
Don't hold him/her too much too. Anoles can get stressed VERY easily. I have only come across one tame anole that I found in the wild, and let her go after I checked her over.

Keeping a treefrog on indoor plants?
I have 3 large yucca plants, two ferns, and assorted other potted plants all near my window. I had an anole lizard that lived in them for 4 months before I released it that did just fine. Would a treefrog survive indoors in the plants?
Keeping a treefrog on indoor plants?
A tree frog will do well in the plants you mentioned. Do you have a bromeliad in the "assorted other potted plants"? You may even become a "grandfrog" if you do, they like to breed tadpoles in them.

Anyone know what this plant is?
I was in garden centre a few days ago, I saw this most BEAUTIFUL plant, bit like a yucca in shape, but instead of the leaves, it had a fabulous blue flowery spike, about 3 or 4 coming off a centre stem a bit like a candlabra, it was called something beginning with E and I cant find it anywhere. It was very expensive, £25 a plant, and I would like to try growing it from bulb or seed or whatever it is.
Anyone know what this plant is?
A picture is always nicer but the only things I can think of that have blue spikes are russian sage, delphiniums, veronica, salvia and lupine -good luck!

We have a very small graveyard in the yard at our house (which is a parsonage.) The missionaries who founded?
The church are buried there. It is surrounded by some ugly steel pipes. I'd like to build a stone wall around it and plant a lot of flowers instead, maybe a bench to sit on and meditate, maybe enough room for my urn at their feet.
We are on a reservation... should I try "brought on " flowers, or try to decorate it with sagebrush, cactus, yucca, and chokecherry ?
My other thought was some English flowers, since they came here from England via Canada. But it has to be hardy in zone 3 or 4a.
I hope I get a lot of ideas. Thanks in advance.

2. if your hearts rite and you mean well noone should be offended
3.english flowers , brought on flowers (whatever they are ) or desert plants are all better options than they've had in the past

Most species of Yuccas are robust, hardy and adaptable. Be sure you have good drainage. Remember, Yucca is a native to the Southwest. They like full sun, somewhat sandy soil (for good drainage). Excessive moisture can cause root rot. I live in the Pacific Northwest where it rains a lot and at times temperatures as low as 10 degrees in winter and my Yuccas do great. I just don't water them but about once a month in the summer and fertilize (liquid) once at the beginning of Spring.
If you have them in containers put about 3 - 8 inches (depending on container size) of packing peanuts in the bottom of container before adding in the sandy soil. This will keep the weight of the container lighter than if you use rocks for drainage, making it easier to move it to the sun. For only the first year planted protect it from the cold by mulching or moving to a frost free %26amp; cool location. Yuccas don't bloom for several years after planted they have to be well established.
The main thing is drainage and sun!

My cat eats my Yucca Plant?
How do i stop him...Why does he do it ...and will it do him any harm?...
My cat eats my Yucca Plant?
my kitten eats my plants but my nan said to put some pepper on it and now he's stopped so try that hope it works for you too, it shouldnt do him any harm when they go outside they eat allsorts of things
Reply:Some houseplants are very toxic and potentially fatal.
Not sure about the Yucca plant though.
Call poison control to find out.
Bring some fresh unpesticided grass in for your kitty to eat.
Gd. luck.
Reply:cats eat plants and grass cause it helps them bring up their fur ball if thats any help the only way your going to get him to stop is tell your cat off when he goes near it and when you go out lock the plant in another room with the door locked so the cat cant get it i hope this is helpful
Reply:Many people are under the frame of mind that you can't have cats and house plants in the same household. That is only a misconception. The fact of the matter is that you don't have to choose.
If your cat is just eating the leaves you can fix this problem with giving them something more appealing to eat. Go down to your local pet store and pick up pet grass. Most cats prefer this and it also helps with more stomach related illnesses as well. Pet grass can be hard to come by since so many cats love it.
Reply:Dont worry, its a natural thing. My cat its my plant as well. There is probably no way to train your cat to stop, so you could just try moving the plant up to a higher location in the room. Somewhere where your cat cant reach up to.
Reply:It doesn't hurt anything other than the Yucca. Cats like green stuff to nibble on. there are little kits with grass you can grow inside for your cat.

Help me!!!! I don't get it The corrosion of stainless steel containers in the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear
The corrosion of stainless steel containers in the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada is a potential problem. One potentially corrosive ion is fluoride, which appears to be removed from solution by precipitation as calcium fluoride. In test measurements, the concentration of calcium ion was found to be 0.00104 M, and the concentration of fluoride ion was found to be 0.0204 g/L. What is the minimum value for Ksp for calcium fluoride based on these measurements ? Use units of moles and liters in your calculation.

Fluoride concentration is given in grams per liter.
0.0222 g x (1 mol F / 19 g) = 0.00117 mol/L
Ksp = [Ca2+][F-]^2 = (0.00128)(0.00117)^2 = 1.75E-9

fallbrook is still under mandatory evacuation. sounds like everyone who left got out safely %26amp; those who stayed are also fine.

Go to www.cbs8.com, they have hourly updates on the fire and a list of some of the homes destroyed. There are also many stats about the areas destroyed, evacuation alerts and closures. Its very usefull information on there.

How do I sell my house in sixty days?
hoping to buy a new build home, in the Home Sold program with experienced realtor, priced $234900, 1278 sq ft, clean, updated, 3bd2ba, yucca valley, ca, what can i do to ensure a sale? we really want this new house!!!!
How do I sell my house in sixty days?
You have to price your home really well so that it is a HOT BUY for the area. Make sure your Realtor is marketing it and holding open houses. Also make sure that it is on the Internet.
You also want to make sure that your home looks like a model home everyday once it is on the market. You want it to be appealing for buyers. You might want to consider having a professional stager come in and stage your house. Ask your Realtor about it. They are the professional and should be able to tell you what you need to do to get it sold in 60 days. That's tough with the market the way it is right now.
Reply:lol Open houses dont work in Yucca Valley. I'm sure they do in Orange County, but not in the sticks they dont. lololol
Nice try tho. Report It
Reply:open houses and relators is the key sweetie if some one doesnt seem right though DONT DO IT go with ur gut you can do it!!!! ;)

Reply:Pay for closing cost, inspection and their realtor percentage.
Reply:lower your price below market value.

Reply:I wish you the very best of luck! The market is not doing well right now.

Is it true John McCain is bad for nevada?
Some say he is anti-gambling and pro-yucca mountain. I consider myself conservative but am very weary of John McCain. Am I wrong?
Is it true John McCain is bad for nevada?
even if he was anti gambling, which I doubt because they are 'big business' and create jobs, it wouldn't change much about the gambling business in Nevada. Those casinos and the like aren't going anywhere anytime soon no matter who is president...
Reply:It does'nt matter, that caucus is over and it's a red state that will vote for any republican.
,But if the anti gambling people can get another state from making gambling legal, he's earned your vote.
Reply:If he were, he would have shut down all the casinos in Arizona
Reply:Gambling was run for generations by gangsters, and you can bet they are still well represented. Gambling is known to be addictive and a financial disaster for many people. It leads to suicide in some cases, or crime to support the habit.
As for Yucca mountain, safe centralized storage of nuclear waste in a remote area must be done SOMEWHERE even though nobody (including Nevada residents) wants it in their home state. And despite a long "half-life", properly stored nuclear waste DOES eventually deteriorate. Certainly you have heard of "depleted uranium".
McCain is taking reasonable and necessary positions on both issues, and has the guts to state his case for the good of the nation. Bear in mind that, as a former Navy officer, he knows something about nuclear physics (and a good bit more than any of his opponents).

How do I thin out yuccas (Spanish Daggers)?
I bought a house with several in a flower garden. I need to split them up before they take over the area.
How do I thin out yuccas (Spanish Daggers)?
Dig deep and get as big a clump as you can. Try to get as much root as you can too. I slice apart the yucca roots and replant them. I usually have plenty to give away too! Water the new plants well and often, they need to sprout new roots. Don't be discouraged if it looks like you "butchered" the big roots...they will grow! and grow and grow...lol
Reply:They are very hardy. But be careful when working with the things! They "ouch"! Just dig them up as best you can. There will be more to replace them in short order. Not even sure fire will kill them back.
Reply:I used my pickup to pull them up with a chain. Don't leave them laying in the yard or they will reroot.
Reply:I am going through the same thing... i have been digging them out with a shovel, pain in the @%26amp;%26amp;!!! The roots are bigger than a small child! I like the pick up idea!
