If I just chop the top off of my potted Yucca tree will it stay alive?

I want it to sprout more branches. It's over 8 feet tall and pressing against my ceiling. It seems healthy, but top heavy. It's just one big S-shaped stalk. I had to reinforce it with a bungee cord hooked to the ceiling to keep it from falling over. I have it in a 12 in. diameter pot.

If I just chop the top off of my potted Yucca tree will it stay alive?
The simple answer - YES. If you lop the top it will do exactly as you hope it will.
Reply:You can use a method called air-layering to grow roots from the aerial part of the trunk. Then you can sever the trunk below the new roots and plant the top. The lower stem may sprout new shoots, too; hang onto it and see what happens. If you wind up with two healthy plants, put one in a very pretty pot and, voila! you'll have a nice gift for a friend.

From wikipedia:

In air layering, the target region (the trunk) is wounded, then surrounded in a moisture-retaining wrapper such as sphagnum moss, which is further surrounded in a moisture barrier such as polyethylene film. Rooting hormone is often applied to encourage the wounded region to grow roots. When sufficient roots have grown from the wound, the stem from the parent plant is removed and planted.
Reply:If you cut the top off it may sprout from the base again then again it may not. If you cut it about a foot down form the leaves and make a nice clean cut you can plant it and it will grow and you can start over again. This time let it get more light and it will not grow as skinny..
