I've seen in plant shops potted yuccas with very thick stems (as large as the pot, like 20-30 cm large) that got thinner at the top (not like the ones you usually see that are cilinder shape). Is that a different species or you can do it yourself?

Are you sure it is a yucca? It sounds like another species. Best advice is to talk to the people at the plant shop and find out the exact species of the plant you have seen. You can put the name of the species in the Yahoo search box and come up with all kinds of results to explore.

This plant is usually sold in a pot with the base of the plant almost totally filling the width of the pot and then tapering up to a carefree tangle of leaves pluming from a grayish wrinkled trunk.
FYI this is a long lived and very adapable plant.
