NATURAL BALANCE Ultra Premium Dry Cat Food, why does it contain a toxic plant called YUCCA?
I'd call the company. You have to wonder why certain ingredients are in pet foods. I mean, really, what is the purpose??? Thanks for info.
Considering it says Natural... we really have NO idea what we are feeding them.
Reply:Intoxication with yucca can lead to those negative side effect you mention but in the amount in the food it is unlikely to cause a problem. Yucca is used in alternative veterinary medicine for arthritis relief and bowel inflammation.
Reply:No clue - you could write to them and ask. My guess would be that it's either there because it sounds natural (appealing to the humans who buy the food), or perhaps it even provides some trace amount of a nutrient and it's a cheap way to get it into the food.
NB is a fairly decent food overall. I don't believe it's the best, and I know some people who do not think well of the company.
I've never come across yucca in my research on things to avoid in cat food. I'm not saying it's not bad for them, but it seems it's not as bad as some other ingredients. Or perhaps it's a new trend to add it and it's just not been researched yet.
Reply:um...
you do realize that the site you provided is a list of toxins to Dogs.. right?
some things are toxic to dogs that are not toxic to cats, and vice versa
(just like we can eat chocolate, but can't give it to our four legged friends.. and they can eat raw chicken, which wouldn't be advisable to us)
Reply:Because all dry cat foods are species inappropriate.
Why does Evo contain the stupid ingredients it does?
Why does Wellness?
Dry food are not good for cats anyway. Feed them a RAW diet of organic meats and bones and then you can contol what your cat gets!
:o)
