Markus! It is not really that small of a town! 29 Palms on the other hand is and you should know! Yes, and I went to school with you in Yucca Valley at JSCS (Joshua Springs Christian School) just for the people who don't know. Your BEST Friend Paige :)

I have a yucca plant that is going black at the tips. What are the best conditions for it to thrive?

The best conditions for it to thrive in are a warm room and dry soil, water once a month and it needs alot of sunlight, the leafs are turning black because it is going dormant, nothing to worry about.

bathroom it likes it hot and humid
Reply:humidity, not too much light. spray often with fine spray pump can, with boiled water.
Reply:some years ago my daughter gave me a yucca about 1ft high, my wife who hates house plants decided that although she couldn't kill it planted it in the garden. This summer the plant was 7ft high with six stems and it has not had ANY attention at all.

My outdoor Yucca plants are brown this spring after a few years of being beautiful. What happened?

Did they get frost bitten? I lost all my rose bushes cause we had some crazy 80 degree days then back down to the low 30's.

If it bloomed last year it could be a natuaral die off.

I just got my first Yucca Cane indoor plant and I don't know what kind of light it should receive?

The smaller leaves are turning brown and so I started over-watering it which I now know is a bad idea. Not sure what to do and what kind of light the plant/tree should receive?

I just got my first Yucca Cane indoor plant and I don't know what kind of light it should receive?
Yucca's are succulants, they need sparse water and a lot of light, outside in direct light is best. If it is small it may dry out quickly outside in direct light so be sure to keep an eye on it.

I've never heard of a Yucca Cane, but this site might help you identify it.

Also, most Yucca's here in souther California only grow in higher altitudes, above 2k-2500 feet elevation. I'm not sure why, I've heard it from several sources.

Yucca plants in Zone 4 - when can I divide them? Can I divide them?

my wife and I did ours in the spring....we live in the Carolinas. A good rule of thumb I guess is to transplant after danger of all frost has passed.

Yucca plants in Zone 4 - when can I divide them? Can I divide them?
Yes you can divide yuccas, I would recommend doing it in the spring as soon as you can work in the soil. They will have a better chance of surviving. The roots are very thick and may rot if they are transplanted now during the dormant stage.Good luck
Reply:Yes you can.
Reply:In zone 4, I would say the best time to divide would be either right now, before the first frost, or in early spring just after the last frost. When divided every few years, perennials benefit by becoming stronger and producing more blooms. Dividing perennials creates more, smaller, clumps of the same plant. Even if more plants are not desired, perennials should be divided to rejuvenate old plants.

The first step to division is to dig up the plant to be divided. Wash a majority of the soil away from the roots so you can easily determine where to make the division. Some plants can be divided by gently pulling off sections of the crown, while other plants may require a sharp, clean knife to cut through he roots. Do not take too many divisions from one plant, as each section must have enough healthy root to sustain growth. If any part of the root looks dead, damaged or diseased, trim back to healthy white tissue.

As a general rule, plants that flower in the spring and early summer should be divided in the fall. Plants that flower in summer and fall should be divided in the spring before new growth is too large.
Reply:Why would you want to? Those plants are nasty.I have cut my hands on them so many times.

I think you can divide them, now. Wear gloves.
Reply:The Winter is not a good time to break up clustered young plants from their Mother, because we are going into our cold season and these plants will be going into dormancy. It is best to divide these types of plants when they are growing, like in the summer because that growth will provide strength for their new separation and they will be off to a good start. Separating them in the Winter time puts them without shelter and a good root system to be left dormant, and without any strength from their mother plant. So wait until temperatures reach 80 degrees, then break them up.

Can yakka's (yucca's) have their roots trimmed back?

The shape of the pots they are in are causing them to fall over in wind. I am going to buy a different shape and repot. Can the roots be trimmed down when repotting?

Can yakka's (yucca's) have their roots trimmed back?
Yes, Yucca (sing and plural) can have its roots trimmed. Be careful not to scrape the tap root surface and remove all the dead roots.

When is the best time of year to re-pot a yucca plant ?

A yucca plant is generally grown outside in the garden, although it can be grown in a pot. Make sure that the pot is large enough, as they grow quite large. If it's grown indoors, then re-pot when needed, ie, if it's got to big for the pot. This applies to outside also.

I used to have a yucca plant in a large pot, but never got a flower, due to having dogs I gave the yucca to my neighbour earlier in the year, he planted it outside and for the first time in five years it flowered.

Yucca's are hardy plants, despite there tropical appearance, it will bloom quite happily every year if planted in the garden. The Basel rosette is about 2ft high and produces a 4-6ft flower stalk in August.

If you wish to keep it in a pot, try getting hold of an old tall chimney pot. Looks great as an architectural plant.

In spring remove rooted offsets growing at the base of the shrub.

When is the best time of year to re-pot a yucca plant ?
The best time to repot your Yucca is in spring just as it is about to start its new season's growth. Ensure good drainage at the bottom of the pot by part filling with old brocken crockery, gravel or polystyrene pieces. Pre mix your general purpose compost with some sharp sand, some water retaining crystal granules and some fertiliser granules. This mix should last a good year at which time further fertiliser should be added. Spring is the wisest time because the plant requires nutrients at this new growth stage. Repotting at other times will tend to confuse the plant e.g. feeding it fresh fertiliser in autumn when it is trying to be at its least active growthwise. Finally, covering the compost with a mulch (stone or bark chipping) will help maintain the moisture level and ensure the plant is kept watered.

When is it best to fertilize Yucca plants?

Yuccas are desert plants. They survive on almost nothing. I tried to kill one at my moms house an ended up with a dozen from the chopped up bulb.

Water should be all it needs.

When is it best to fertilize Yucca plants?
You don't fertilize Yucca plants.

How do I know if I have to water my yucca plant more or less? It has white marks on leaves which are splitting

Water regularly. Do not over-do.

Sometimes, let soil a bit dry too.

Care Tips - A sturdy plant that does best in a light spot, but not in full sunlight. Water regularly but let the compost dry out between waterings from spring to autumn and water sparingly in winter. Yucca benefits from a spell outdoors in summer.

they are very drought tolerant and very intolerant of overwatering.

yours are probably suffering from root-us rot-us

remove the plant from the soil that it is in and repot into fresh potting soil.

they only need to be watered a couple times A MONTH

make sure the pot has good drainage

they prefer a small pot so the soil dries out quickly
Reply:you shouldnt water it but about once a month it's a cactus and they don't like a lot of water

How do I propagate a piece of yucca trunk?

yucca are very easy to propagate try laying it sideways in some soil you do not have to bury it..I have lots of yuccas and once they get really tall they lay over and where they touch the ground they root.

I done two with hormone rooting powder and they are thriving !.

How to transplant a Yucca Plant to a bigger pot?

If you don't want to save the old pot, simply break it to release the plant and roots. If it is root bound, slice through and/or trim the excessive root system and repot in a larger container. Yucca are very hardy plants and are hard to kill. This also might be a good time to divide the plant into two or more containers.

Good luck.

I done that to mine long ago.....I just took it out of the pot it was in and directly put dirt and all in the new pot and then filled around it with dirt!

What are some benefits of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Storage Facility?
The formation that makes up Yucca Mountain was created by several large eruptions from a caldera volcano and is composed of alternating layers of ignimbrite (welded tuff), non-welded tuff, and semi-welded tuff. Tuff has special physical, chemical and thermal characteristics that some experts believe make it a suitable material to entomb radioactive waste for the hundreds of thousands of years required for the waste to become safe through radioactive decay.

Does yucca palm tree grow flower in them?
The Yucca-Palm is one of the common names for the Joshua Tree. Check out this site for more information about them. It includes photos of the flower, fruit, etc. http://www.delange.org/JoshuaTree/Joshua...

IN RESPONSE TO FURTHER COMMENTS BELOW:

In the botanical world, there are often many different common names for the same plant. There are several different varieties of plant that are often described with the same common name.

As such:

Yucca Palm Tree IS one of the common names used to describe the Yucca brevifolia or Joshua Tree. It very well may be used to also describe the Yucca elata or Soaptree Yucca, but I've personally not heard it referred to as such. It does look much like a small palm tree, so I suppose it would be accurate to call it such if you desire. http://www.fireflyforest.com/flowers/whi...

St. Pepper and M W are both somewhat correct. FYI folks, the Yucca Genus is seperate from the Agave Genus, it was, however, originally classified in the Agave Family, and has subsequently been reclassified into the Lily Family. So you're both right to a point.
Reply:The most spectacular are in Peru, 15 + feet, commonly known there as agave.

The ones I see around the pacifc NW look a little scraggly after a while.
Reply:yucca and agave are completely different things...

yucca is its own genus, so is agave. they're not the same at all.

there is no yucca palm...the things people call yucca palms are actually Soaptree Yuccas, or "Our Lord's Candles." And those aren't the same, or even close to a Joshua Tree.

And a Century plant is Agave americana, not a yucca.

but yes, yuccas will flower.

Reply:Sgt Pepper your information is not correct. Although they are separate genus, they are both in the agave family.

Yes they flower, and most have scent, it all depends on the individual species whether or not it is considered a good smell.

They are all pollinated by specific species of moths in a symbiotic relationship the ensures the continuation of both species.

Yuccas thrive on neglect, sun, drought, poor soil, but so do: Rose Campion, Sedum %26amp; sempervivum, Rugosa Rose, Bachelors Buttons, Yarrow, Shasta Daisies, Rudbeckia, Verbena Bonariensis, Russian Sage, all the Sages, and many herbs.

Don't forget your Spring bulbs! They love hot, dry beds all Summer. No maintenance needed, just occasional weeding.

Yucca filimentosa likes full sun and sharpley drained soils, it will not tolerate it if it's roots are continually wet.

It is a very architectural plant .plant it with other plants that require sharply drained soils such and Sedum and stonecrop(many many varieties)and Yarrow
Reply:you will find that plants native to your area will survive and grow much better with less care than will something imported from another temperate zone.

Yucca are plant family Agavae or agavaceae and there are many varieties worldwide.

In Florida, the yucca is native and does quite well uncared for in wilderness areas. And the white flower spikes are most attractive.

When is the best time to transplant yucca plants?

the best time is in the spring make sure you don't disturber the root too much. This can also be done in the early fall, but make sure the roots have time to settle before frost.

When is the best time to transplant yucca plants?
I'm not sure if you were growing the yucca in a pot indoors or outside in the ground. If you had it in the ground, you can transplant in other locations in the ground, if indoor, you can make new plants and repot the original in a larger pot. The extra two plants are pups, and can be separated from the mother plant if they are about 1/3 the size of the biggest plant. So take the yucca out of its original container or location, remove the pups if they are large enough, and replant them all in new pots or locations, although the mother plant will need a larger pot or larger area in your home landscape. Now is as good a time as any to do this.

It is the New Mexico state flower.
Reply:With certain species, the root can be ground up, the moisture squeezed out, and used for shampoo! The American Indians have been using it for years.

There are multiple types of outdoor Yucca Plants and they can have all different kinds of very large beautiful pink and white flowers. Many people have trouble with them and a lot of them end up dying, or that is at least what I've been told by our customers and have seen myself.

My Yucca tree has alot of black on the tips of the leaves, any idea what it could be and how to treat it?

I've seen rust on other yucca plants before but never black, I thought if not a disease it could perhaps be excess nitrogen but I just don't know and the plant looks otherwise extremely healthy and is growing at a thenominal rate !!

My Yucca tree has alot of black on the tips of the leaves, any idea what it could be and how to treat it?
Couple of thoughts - though it would be easier to know whether this is an indoor Yucca or is outdoors.

Is it external to the leaves, ie. can it be washed/scaped off etc? Is there any sticky deposit as well?

If so, it could be mould that is growing, often ontop of sticky

deposits from aphids.

Usually the tips of leaves is where it is hardest to get water to, and thus often dry out, especially with out centrally heated homes in winter. If it is this, you should also notice that the leaf is drier here, as it has dried up.

Otherwise, it could be leaf rot, perhaps again due to less than perfect conditions in winter. You phenomenal growth rate could mean this is nonsense, but I'm not sure if this is in part due to poor light and it's reaching up and up to get more of it, coupled with some decay.

Just some quick thoughts. Get back and metion if it is indoors or outdoors, as this will help alot.

Good luck! Rob
Reply:they were exposed to below freezing temps . the black is dead plant , trim those off and it will be fine
Reply:I believe that the moisture in the plant does not reach the tip of the leaves.

I have noticed this also in one household but as you said the plant is very healthy.

Would it be a good idea do you think if you sponge the tip of the leaves now %26amp; again before they turn black?

Worth considering?
Reply:could be fungal, they dont like moisture on their leaves and being kept in shade.

My horse has been on it for about 2 weeks and has experience this week a mild colic and today his legs were very stocked up. A lil help here.

Has anyone had any allergic reactions to feeding their horse devils claw/yucca in the form of B-L solution?
Why is the horse on it? For pain control, steroidal like effects?

I would immediately take him off and see if theres improvement within the next 2 weeks.

Personally I wouldn't wait, 2 wks and would pull him off now and have him seen by a vet. It sounds like a reaction to me.
Reply:My horse has been on it for a year, no problems.

HOWEVER- all horses are different and can react differently, just as people have different allergies, too.

I'd call the vet ASAP. It may be something as simple as your horse needing the pellets vs the liquid, or something like that. Or it could be a very big deal.

Stop the solution. Call the vet. It may not be related at all - but it could be deadly.

How quickly do yucca/yukka plants grow??

Outdoor types grow fairly quickly here in the South. They like full sun and a well drained soil to do best.

How quickly do yucca/yukka plants grow??
I live in south wales where we get lots of rain and some sunshine, moderatley cold winters and rarely any snow. I have 3 yukka trees growing in pots outside. They are not the healthiest looking plants and their growth rate is very, very slow. I think they grew faster when I had them inside the house. There each about 3 foot tall now and I had them about 8 years ago when they were only about a foot and a half, so they've doubled their size in 8 years.

Does anyone know how to kill yucca plants???

The plants were here when I bought the house, 6 of them! I've tried amonia directly in the stalk during the growing period as suggested by a professional but they still live and get bigger every year. They are choking out a lot of other plants that I would rather have.

Rock Salt. pour it around the roots, and water it. The salt will kill the plant in no time flat! (I use it to kill trees and other plants when I want to get rid of something quick).

How do you revive a tired-looking Yucca plant(no funnies!)?

It could very well have to do with the lighting. Yucca comes from southern Mexico and must have high direct light. So first provide better care and maintenance by giving more light. If the plant is too far away from a good light source; the results will be weak growth and the plant will use very little water. Also a good flow of circulating air is important due to the fluctuation of temperatures in the winter-even inside the home.

Every couple of years, repot it, using a bigger pot and good quality compost.

When the leaves get dusty, just wipe them with a damp cloth, bearing in mind the edges are sharp and can easily cut you!

Cut off any dead leaves, usually at the bottom of the plant, and finally,

...water it well. A lot of people think you don't need to water a yucca much, but the secret is give it a lot of water every week or two. I give mine about 2 litres at a time, every 2 weeks.

If it's really dry looking with droopy leaves, you could even put in the bath and run the shower over it for 10 minutes, I did this with mine after I came back from holiday once when it was looking very sorry for itself, and it came up a treat!
Reply:i wipe my yucca plabts leaves with milk and it likes mozart.no bull its true

I was wondering if anyone had any tips to recover a dying yucca cane tree?
'm not an expert but i had the same problem myself a few years ago....a yucca i had in the wrong place (in the house under a chimney piece) and it slowly gave up on itself...i was upset because it was a gift and had some good memories for me....well when it got down to about two leaves i took it outside and trimmed back any dead or manky looking parts then soaked it in water for a couple of days before re potting it in a large tub and positioned it in a light and airy place well protected from drafts....now this may or may not be the 'right' thing to do but i can tell you it worked for me and the little yucca never looked back growing into quite a respectable tree shape!! good luck and don't give up!!

How do I care for a yucca palm tree?

Half a day of sunlight, water occasionally. Let the leaves almost wilt between watering's, so as not to over water. They don't like wet feet. As long as you keep them warm, indoors, and feed sparingly, they are hard to kill. I have one that is 20 yrs old, the main problem is it keeps growing too tall.

And keep indoor cats away from it, they will chew on the leaves.

Also, be aware that some people get allergic reactions from touching the leaves.

How do I care for a yucca palm tree?
If it is a baby one, it needs to be somewhere warm (maybe indoors) in lots of sunlight, as they wilt without sunlight. Plus, any plant feeder with weekly watering should do it fine. Get rid of any yellowing leaves as well.

How do you get rid of yucca plants? They keep growing back when I dig them up. Help!?

These are very tough plants! Dig up as much of the plant as possible, then dig some more to find all of the roots, or put shrub and brush killer on the roots, that are left. Even following these measures, you still may have some plants pop up. Keep after them, it might take a long time to kill them out, totally.

Once they are established they are hard to kill. I have dug as deep as 4 feet to get rid of them and they came back 2 years later. I kept at it and got rid of them but you have to keep trying. The first time is the worst after you remove the main portion of the plant only small starts come back.
Reply:Try using a liquid weed killer,(Round up) spray the plants, then dig them up....the killer will go strait to the roots and kill it...then use a pre- emergent killer, to stop them from coming up....
Reply:Pour bleach full strength on the plant after you cut it at ground level.

Why are the leaves on my yucca going limp?
You may be overwatering it. They don't like wet roots.

How many total species of Yucca exist on Earth?

I need to know approximately how many species exist, and I need to have a citable source which I can use in a scientific bibliography.

Thanks!

How many total species of Yucca exist on Earth?
The yuccas comprise the genus Yucca of 40-50 species of perennials, shrubs, and trees in the agave family Agavaceae, notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal clusters of white or whitish flowers. They are native to the hot and dry parts of North America, Central America, and the West Indies.
Reply:I'm glad you said that. Up until very recently I thought the wikipedia ruled. But I've been very upset with wikipedia lately. Their botany and zoology seems good though. Report It

Yucca grows on the side of the highway here, I tried to buy some for my yard. Could not find any. Is Yucca protected? Where could I buy plants? Appreciate your input. Thank's.

I'm in ks. I've seen very nice huge yuccas in lowe's %26amp; home depot. I've never heard of them being protected. I believe I've also seen them at walmart. Alot of people have them in their yards here. Try these stores, I'm sure you'll find some.

How do you harvest a yucca root?

I had a friend who had a large group of Yucca plants in her yard and her kid plowed into them on his bike. It broke off a piece, I was going to take it home, and forgot. About a week later, the piece was still sitting in a pale without water, I took it home, stuck it in the ground, watered it, and 5 years later, it`s about 9-10 feet high now. You don`t need to do anything. They just somehow grow on their own, without help.

How do you harvest a yucca root?
i dont thin you have to do much since they grow in the desert anyways!!

How much salt do I need in the water when boiling 1.5 lbs of Yucca?

i just can't get this right and no recipe that I have found specifies!

How much salt do I need in the water when boiling 1.5 lbs of Yucca?
Add enough salt so the water tastes salty.
Reply:Yucca? That's a pesky thorny plant in my garden, why would you cook that?More to the point, HOW could you eat it?

How can I separate four baby plants from a Yucca mother plant and when is the best time to do it?

Not sure about the best time, but take one leaf, cut it through the veins with a razor blade, leaving the leaf intact.

Lay the leaf on bedding compost and wait.

Be good to it, it works.

How can I separate four baby plants from a Yucca mother plant and when is the best time to do it?
just stick a leaf in the ground
Reply:in the fall which is soon.. dig around the babies, you should see roots on the baby plants.. if the babies are still attached 2 mother, just break the babies off.. as long as the babies have their own roots, they should make just fine on their own..
Reply:The best time to remove the basal suckers is in the Spring.Pot them up in good draining peat based compost, with some added extra washed grit.
Reply:I don't think there is really a best time. Just when the baby plants look healthy enough. Usually plants like this are hard to kill.
Reply:As soon as the baby plants are well 'rooted', it is time. ;p
Reply:I would go down carefully w/ a shovel and get as much of the roots out as you can. yuccas are hardy so I dont think it matters as long as the plant is doing well. Just make sure it gets enough water when transplanted

Can you shape the stem of a potted indoor yucca plant?

I've seen in plant shops potted yuccas with very thick stems (as large as the pot, like 20-30 cm large) that got thinner at the top (not like the ones you usually see that are cilinder shape). Is that a different species or you can do it yourself?

Can you shape the stem of a potted indoor yucca plant?
Are you sure it is a yucca? It sounds like another species. Best advice is to talk to the people at the plant shop and find out the exact species of the plant you have seen. You can put the name of the species in the Yahoo search box and come up with all kinds of results to explore.

Good luck with your gardening.

This plant is usually sold in a pot with the base of the plant almost totally filling the width of the pot and then tapering up to a carefree tangle of leaves pluming from a grayish wrinkled trunk.

FYI this is a long lived and very adapable plant.

Is Yucca Root healthy for you? Is the juice extracted from the Yucca Root toxic?

I was just wondering if yucca root is healthy for you. Is the juice extracted from the yucca root toxic. The reason I am asking this is because I am taking a supplement that contains Garlic Juice in combination with Yucca Juice.

Is Yucca Root healthy for you? Is the juice extracted from the Yucca Root toxic?
It's good for you, there is nothing wrong in eating them.I grow them here in my yard and I know many folks eat them and they are all healthy, including me.I don't think the combination of the two juices harm you,but if you're worried, ask a doctor,I'm sure he'll say the same thing.
Reply:if it looks weird, don't eat it. yucca root killer! yucca moths rely on those ya no

If I just chop the top off of my potted Yucca tree will it stay alive?

I want it to sprout more branches. It's over 8 feet tall and pressing against my ceiling. It seems healthy, but top heavy. It's just one big S-shaped stalk. I had to reinforce it with a bungee cord hooked to the ceiling to keep it from falling over. I have it in a 12 in. diameter pot.

If I just chop the top off of my potted Yucca tree will it stay alive?
The simple answer - YES. If you lop the top it will do exactly as you hope it will.
Reply:You can use a method called air-layering to grow roots from the aerial part of the trunk. Then you can sever the trunk below the new roots and plant the top. The lower stem may sprout new shoots, too; hang onto it and see what happens. If you wind up with two healthy plants, put one in a very pretty pot and, voila! you'll have a nice gift for a friend.

From wikipedia:

In air layering, the target region (the trunk) is wounded, then surrounded in a moisture-retaining wrapper such as sphagnum moss, which is further surrounded in a moisture barrier such as polyethylene film. Rooting hormone is often applied to encourage the wounded region to grow roots. When sufficient roots have grown from the wound, the stem from the parent plant is removed and planted.
Reply:If you cut the top off it may sprout from the base again then again it may not. If you cut it about a foot down form the leaves and make a nice clean cut you can plant it and it will grow and you can start over again. This time let it get more light and it will not grow as skinny..

Symptoms of a dog who ate yucca?

I live in an apartment complex that has yucca plants outside, Our neighbors dogs who ate them say they had real bad pucking problems. I have a boxer who has just started having horrible diarea that contains blood. Could this also be from the yucca plant? He is still eating his food and drinking water and is not acting sick. Anyone who has any answers please help.

Also about a year ago he had a liver malfunction, but has been fine since we started him on Perscription Diet dog food.

Symptoms of a dog who ate yucca?
Get him to the emergency vet if your regular vet is not open. Bloody diarrhea is not something you should ignore, even if he "seems fine."
Reply:Do not take advice from here when your pet has blood coming out it could just be worms that can be treated, but not with the stuff in the pet store there are more than one or two types of worms then again it could be something way more serious, I would be on the phone ASAP if they couldn't see me I'd be at emergency Vet
Reply:yikes, anytime there is blood in the dog's stool you should bring him into the vet. Are you positive that its blood and not something red that he has eaten? Keep a close eye on him and if the runny stools continue, or if you see anything resembling blood, I would get him into the vet ASAP. If anything, give them a call and see if they think you have anything to worry about. Never take vet advice on here... You never know if the person on the other side of the computer really knows what they are talking about or if they are just a bored 10 year old claiming that they do... Good luck!

What are the tiny bugs in the pot of my Yucca plant?

all around the roots were these tiny little white bugs. Wondering if they should be treated with something or let them be. The plant is inside and isn't doing very well. The leaves are dying.

What are the tiny bugs in the pot of my Yucca plant?
If they look like cotton they could be mealy bugs. if they just have small bodies they could be plant lice. For either one mix up some strong detergent in water and dip a cue-tip in it. Stand the plant in the tub and brush them off the leaves with the wet cue-tip. Rinse the plants leaves with the shower. Check them every few days in case the bugs come back - just repeat.
Reply:Probably aphids. Do a search for how to get rid of them.
Reply:Remove the plant from the soil and pot and soak it in a tub of water mixed with dishwashing liquid. Throw the soil out! It's infested with either mites or aphids. Clean the pot throughly. Rinse the plant in clear water and repot it.

Should I throw out my Yucca canes or wait until summer?

I had my Yuuca cane plants since last summer stands 5ft and the leaves are dead. There are maybe 10 living leaves, but it's winter. Will they grow back in the summer or is the plant dead? I was going to throw it out today....should I wait until summer?

Should I throw out my Yucca canes or wait until summer?
If I were you, I'll wait till next summer. It might live fully again. And if it dies, you'll not have any remorse of conscience for it died with a natural death.
Reply:Definitely wait until warm weather returns. Plants often loose some leaves in a frost or freeze, but the main part of the plant may still be perfectly fine. When new growth begins in the spring, you can trim off the dead leaves.

How do you fry or cook the white cluster at the top of a yucca plant? What is the name? like frying okra?

This is supposedly very good. We tasted the (leaf?) and it was a lot like the texture of a magnolia flower, but a taste like cucumber ?

How do you fry or cook the white cluster at the top of a yucca plant? What is the name? like frying okra?
We just call them Yucca Blossoms here in West Texas. Pluck individual blooms, wash and then parboil for 1 minute or so. After that, they can be sauted in butter or you can batter and fry them. Leaves aren't eaten here.

Can I keep my Yucca plant alive this winter?

it's indoors in a 3-season porch but it gets very cold out there in winter (like 30 degrees F). I can't bring it inside the house because my cats will try to eat it, and there really is nowhere else to put it. Can it survive such temps? Is there something I can cover it with to help?

Can I keep my Yucca plant alive this winter?
I live in North Central Oklahoma and there are Yucca growing in several places around town. Some were very mature when I moved here 15 yr. ago so you should not have a problem.
Reply:What kind of yucca? Many types are cold hardy, and will be fine.
Reply:If you live in Tx. it should be fine outside but to be safe you could cover it with a burlap bag if available to you. I have just used a trash bag for mine and it was just the same as before

I covered it.
Reply:You can use one of those blue tarps. You know the kind, normally sold in the paint department at the local Hardware Store. You can also put something like straw or hay around the pot to protect the roots. I get those swamp cooler pads that are sold in the summertime to use. They are just like straw, but are contained in a mesh,or netting so they are way less messy. If it gets to cold, heat some rocks in the oven, and put them around the base of the pot, then cover with the tarp. You probably think I am weird, and maybe so,but we used to heat rocks up, and put them into pillowcases then stick our feet inside. Of course that was while we where camping and fishing out in the cold night, but they kept us warm all night. Really though, just a tarp would help it from freezing. Byee
Reply:If it's native to any where in the US it should be able to take some light freezes at the least.

How do I get rid of a yucca plant that is........?

growing right in the middle of my lilac bush?? I've tried digging it up and using a hatchet to chop it out. I only made it angry and it grew back in about 5 different places. I want it gone permanently but without ruining my lilac bush at the same time.

How do I get rid of a yucca plant that is........?
Lol. Yeah, yucca is a hard plant to get rid of. I wish I could help, but I have trouble with those plants, too. But on the bright side, you can always make paintbrushed out of them.

Here is one site I found. I hope it helps a bit

http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load...
Reply:Use undiluted RoundUp on the yucca. Carefuly paint it on a few of the leaves being sure not to get it on your lilac. Otherwise you'll have to dig the long tap roots out - lots of work that might injure the lilac.
Reply:You local garden center might be willing to dig it out for free if you will give it to them.

I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area?

I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching :

arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I've found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel

I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area?
Hi Mykiel My grand father who lived in Phoenix loved his roses they loved the hot dry climate(no fungus, black spot or mildew) I always love wildflowers in the spring and with the record rain fall a couple years back flowers were blooming in Death Valley, now it's moved back to us the rain(I live in Seattle WA(Flooding everywhere)) want water come and take all you want right now. Sorry back to wild flowers with water they will grow through growing season to mid summer if having enough water (pray for rain)

Have you Looked at Sunset Western Garden Book.I've had a copy for twenty years on my second book now.

I would sow your wildflower seed as soon as you can because they do take root early even under snow to race above all the others for rites, I love wildflowers

Send me some pic of your achievements I'd love to see it Good Luck and the Gods be with you (I'm part American Indian) I have some succulents that would be interesting to try there one is from Russia and the other is a beautiful maroon with grayish tipped pads about the size of a dime, very pretty good Luck again Chris
Reply:take a ride around the neighborhood and see what the neighbors have
Reply:Regular flower don't grow in the desert with out alot of water. Try California poppy or south african daiseys.
